[Seoul = Newspim] Reporter Kyung-Hwa Lee = Expensive medical expenses are also one of the reasons why abandoned animals occur. For low-income and vulnerable families, the burden of costs is high, so there is a high possibility that they will give up treatment or lead to abandonment.
In order to reduce the burden of medical expenses, Gangdong-gu announced on the 9th that it will support pet medical expenses for recipients of basic livelihood security, the next lower class, and single-parent families.
Gangdong-gu was the first in the country to start a project to provide essential animal medical services, such as vaccinations, to vulnerable pets in 2016. The city of Seoul also operated it as a pilot project in 2021, and it was found to have brought about various positive effects, including improving the health of pets and emotional stability for the vulnerable.
This year, ▲Garam Animal Hospital (Seongnae-dong) ▲Zion Animal Hospital (Cheonho-dong) ▲Jurassic Animal Hospital (Cheonho-dong) ▲Dodam Animal Hospital (Godeok-dong) ▲Ian Animal Hospital (Godeok-dong) ▲Central Animal Hospital (Godeok-dong) ▲Kim Taehwa Animal Hospital ( Dunchon-dong) ▲A total of 8 locations, including Sangil Tsudamsseudam Animal Hospital (Sangil-dong), have been designated as ‘Animal Hospitals in Our Neighborhood’. Considering accessibility, such as travel distance, the number of designated animal hospitals was expanded from 4 last year to 8.
Up to 2 animals per household, up to 400,000 won per animal are supported. Support includes essential medical treatment (basic health checkup, vaccination, heartworm disease, equivalent to 300,000 won) and optional treatment (treatment for symptoms or diseases discovered during the basic checkup, or neutering surgery, equivalent to 200,000 won), with a self-pay of 10,000 won. Should be. Any amount exceeding 200,000 won for elective treatment is borne by the guardian. However, the animal must be registered, and if the animal is not registered, you can receive support after registering the animal.
The application period is on a first-come, first-served basis until the budget is exhausted. Applications can be made by phone or in person at the Regional Economy Department of Gangdong-gu Office. Once the application is completed, you can visit the designated animal hospital on the designated date, submit your ID card, animal registration card, medical support application, and documents proving that you are a vulnerable group (recipient certificate, confirmation of the next lower class, and single-parent family confirmation) and receive treatment.
From 2022 to present, Gangdong-gu has provided medical services to 133 animals from 122 vulnerable households, and the medical support budget is jointly borne by Gangdong-gu and Seoul City and is being carried out through talent donation from animal hospitals that have signed a designation agreement. For further details, please refer to the Gangdong-gu website or contact the Gangdong-gu Office Regional Economy Department.
