Alright, me first banner tutorial ever! Smile
Made with Photoshop CS1, I used selective colouring in this case, so I'm afraid it's not exactly translatable, though I'm sure there must be a way to get the colouring with other programs.
I didn't keep the psd, so I did my best to make it as similar to the original as I could...
Onto the tutorial now:
-Get your base...one of my pics has more contrast and is sharper than the other but I didn't take the time to make them more alike (it's perfectly possible, I'm just lazy) There's really no need to get rid of the background, you won't see it in the final result, so I just deleted the overlapping parts with a blurred brush.
I had like 3 layers for each pic, screened at different % - (fix that to your liking and according to your pics) I sharpened the pic from DMC once, the CotBP one -courtesy of our own SF Smile- twice.

-Make a Selective colour layer
Reds
-100 0 +14 0
Yellows
+43 -21 +23 0
Greens
+43 -27 +17 0
Cyans
+100 0 0 0
Blues
+100 0 0 0
Neutrals
+22 0 -19 +10
-Colour balance layer
midtones
-19 0 +19
shadows
+15 0 -20

-Another Selective colour layer
Reds
+100 +100 -100 0
Yellows
0 0 -62 0
Magentas
-5 +100 -100 0

-New layer, fill with 0D0D33, set to exclusion 100%
-New layer fill with C997B9, set to colour burn 30%

-Add this texture by peoplemachines, set to screen 100%
-New layer, fill with E6E4B6, soft light 100%

-Add this texture by peoplemachines, set to multiply 100%

-Add this texture by loveicon, I scaled it, duplicated it, mirrored it, chained the 2 layers together and set to overlay 100%. Moved it a bit around.

-Added this texture by Tre, distorted it so the light blue part covers the whole banner, set to multiply 44%

-Added some tiny text and heart brushes - I sadly don't know by who, got them ages ago. I used the Hannibal Lecter font for "just kiss". Ticked drop shadow.

-Flattened image. As it looked too yellow to my taste I made a violet photofilter layer
...and it's done! If you have any doubts about how to do things or find them inside PS, go right ahead and ask Smile

WOW. This is so fantastic, if only I could find the Selective Colour layer function in my Photoshop.

I. Love. You.

I'm not lying.

I. Love. You.

End of story.

*bows before your genius*

Edit: By the way, I love that font, too. Much fun to play with.

I am certain I am in Heaven.

It also shows me that a texture that I attempted to create a few months back is actually pretty good. Very Happy It needs a little tweaking still. Then I will post it... in the cargo hold. *jumps with excitement and opens Photoshop*

Thanks all for the enthusiasm! Smile
TBP, I personally think selective colouring is overrated. The ones which, IMHO, are my best banners do not include SC at all.
Artanis, you never fail to crack me up! Laughing
PP, under my banner, you'll find the link to my LJ, the resources link is almost all over it Wink - as it has no comments, I think I could post it but prefer to be on the safe side... Mr. Green

My resource post has no comments on it either? Who really does comment on it anyway? Except the person I might have left out, but besides that...

And I'm funny?! I'm funny everyone! According to wills, I'm a funny gal. I feel somewhat better now. If only this cough would go away.

^Laugh I hope I can survive lasertag, though.

If we screen the comments, could we post our resource post? For others?

I think lasertag is like paintball with less bruises at the end of the day.

And screening comments, that's an excelllent idea!

Yeah, lasertag is like paintball, but with laser guns instead.

No one has commented on my Resource post as of yet, so maybe that'd be the way to go.

Thanks for the explanation, gals...I feel stupid always asking about things Embarassed ...I do know about the birds and the bees, I swear! Laughing

Back on topic Smile ...tonight we will be making Jen's previous banner. Made with PS CS1, no selective colouring (only some curves) so I think it's perfectly possible to make with Gimp, PSP and Elements.
-Start with a crumpled paper texture as background (from Feel; imprint) Could have been any other texture, or just a plain grey layer, no clue why I used this one, but that's what I used. Razz

-My first pic. Don't sharpen, delete with a blurred brush the not desired parts. Copy and set to screen 100%

Second pic. Repeat stated above. This time I used the magic wand to get rid of part of the background. That's why it looks like it's been ripped.

Third pic. Same as with the first.

-I took a scratchy icon texture by..(lemme know if you know)..distorted and duplicated it like 3 times and merged/chained. With a blurred brush deleted the pesky scratches over the gorgeous faces. Set to screen 100%. Should look like this

So we get this by now.

-Colour burn layer...with darker and lighter shades of 46422F and a blurred brush, I created some kind of shade where I thought it looked nice. Mr. Green Set opacity at opacity 73%
-Added one of the big textures from Immortal Memories, set to overlay 56% opacity, 36% fill.
-Copy the texture again, set to screen 89%

-New curves layer. Should look like this. (no clue how to say it otherwise!)

-New levels layer
RGB 0 1,00 239
Output levels 0 211
-Green Photofilter layer density 25%

-Red Photofilter layer density 25%
-Brightness contrast layer
+7 +14

-Hue saturation layer
saturation -11
-Added text (traveling typewriter from dafont) and Bob's your uncle!

My resources are here (link to my journal, comments are screened so if sb comments only I can see it Smile)

edited to update resources link---

wooooooooooowwww *bows in amazement* fantastic. And it looks 3-D.

Artanis, you play lasertag???? way cool!!! I've only seen that once, didn't play cuz just before, I ate too much at Moe's to run around. Did go inside with permission and looked around and watched everyone. I'm a paintball gal myself. And yeh, bruises are an understatement. But it's a wicked, intense game.

all I gotta say is
...WOW!
thank you, willslover!! Very Happy

p.s.-- paintball ain't nothin' like lasertag! oh yes, both involve attempting to tag someone with an extension of a gun, but the mechanics, mindset, and purpose of the games are very different. but don't mind me, I'm just a crazy paintball-aholic who cares too much about details... carry on, folks... Textures are used like a regular picture. You can download them, usually in a zipped file, and then unzip them to use them in your program. You drag the layer onto your image and then set it to various different kinds of blending options such as: Multiply, Soft Light, Screen, Exclusion, etc... for GIMP, they vary in what they're called and stuff, the blending options. So, that's how you use them.

thanks, clare! better late than never Wink

Icon tutorial this time Smile

For Liz, who asked about it on LJ. *smooches* the Pride and Prejudice one is similar, with other texture as background. I didn't concetrate on the animation part, there are a couple of animated tuts around already...You just make all these layers on top of the animation layers. Once you're done with all these steps, you go to ImageReady (or well, dunno how it works in elements, but it's perfectly translatable). I have an animation tut on my LJ, sorry I haven't posted it here, it's too long and has too many images...

Get your pic ( one of the animation frames in this case)

>Levels layer
rgb
input 0 1,62 226
output 0 255
>Brightness/contrast layer
b +6
c +21

>Add texture by my_givenchy (?) Scale/distort to your liking. Blending options > drop shadow.

>Add texture by loveicon...erase the center with a blurred brush/marquee tool (multiply)

-->
>Add this texture by peoplemachines (screen)
>Colour balance layer
midtones -35 -3 +14
shadows +13 +2 0
>New layer, fill with FFF1D2, multiply
>Add this texture by graphic_sl (soft light)
>Add this texture by peachinparis, multiply, erase the center.

>Add this texture by peoplemachines, multiply
>For the text layer, turn off the animation frames. Type "goodbye" in 28 days later font..play with the settings.

and there you have it Smile

Very interesting! Great tutorial! And with Elements, making animations is a bit more difficult I think...

You have to duplicate every texture that you want to use for every frame and then merge. It gets insanely repetitive.

Very Happy
